Striped icebergs of the Antarctic

Posted by THC

Littering the Antarctic are icebergs, large pieces of freshwater ice that have broken off from snow-formed glaciers or ice shelfs and float in open waters

Resembling strange creatures from the deep, rare striped icebergs are occasionally seen

Norwegian sailor Oyvind Tangen, 62, was on board the research ship G O Sars when he photographed this unusual ice formation, floating a few miles off the coast of the frozen continent

While most icebergs are white due to tiny bubbles trapped inside, which scatter the light in every direction, some pick up a multitude of colours due to various natural phenomena

Iceberg stripes may be the result of algae growing in the ice...

...though often they form when the ice sheets from which bergs are formed pick up layers of sediment

Deep blue lines can also appear when the air bubbles are squeezed out due to rapid melting and re-freezing of the ice

Global warming is not being cause by CO2.

Its being caused by co2 enmissions AND cyclic changes in solar activity. This is the reason why the changes are more dramatic this time than earlier cycles. Compounded problem.
